Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Lawton Ridge Winery was established in 2008 to commercially produce wine from a small wine grape vineyard near Lawton, Michigan. The wine vineyard has existed since 1974 and was named Lawton Ridge Vineyard after the rolling hills and location. Because of its remote location, the production and tasting room site was chosen in Kalamazoo to be more readily accessible for guests to visit.

  • Yes! We have light snacks including charcuterie, pretzels, and chocolates. We also host a food truck weekly on Wednesdays from 5-8 pm. Because we offer food, we do not allow outside food.

  • Lawton Ridge Winery opened its doors to the public in 2008 with several vintages produced from grapes grown at Lawton Ridge Vineyard. The vineyard had been managed by wine hobbyists since 1974, before being managed for commercial production today.

  • “Dad’s Place” Diner! Stadium Drive and Red Arrow Highway used to be old US Route 12 – the main thoroughfare between Detroit and Chicago before Interstate 94 was built. The diner served as a place of respite during the long journey. The building is believed to have been constructed in the 1930’s and besides a diner, has also been a gas station, machine shop, and warehouse, before becoming a winery in 2008.

  • Yes! At our Lawton Ridge Vineyard site, we grow about ten acres combined of Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling, Traminette, Seyval Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chambourcin, and Cabernet Franc. This vineyard supplies about 95% of our needed annual volume. If we make other wines, like Concord or Merlot, they are still made with grapes grown with the Lake Michigan Shore AVA.

  • An American Viticulture Area (AVA) is a distinct region that reflects the soil and climate and its effects on wine grapes that are grown there. Michigan has five designated AVA’s, of which Lake Michigan Shore (LMS) is the oldest and largest. You can find out more information on the LMS AVA and the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail here.

  • Yes! Our third-generation family fruit farm – Schultz Fruitridge Farms – in Mattawan grows over 30 acres of apples. We use a proprietary blend of sweet and tart apples to craft quality hard cider.

  • We make all of our wine at our main production facility and tasting room at 8456 Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo. We also make some cider there as well and at the family farm in Mattawan – Schultz Fruitridge Farms.

  • The best place to purchase all of our wine and hard cider selection is at the tasting room. We also have a curated selection of wine and cider available for sale at Texas Corners Brewing Company and Schultz Fruitridge Farms. We are also in a handful of stores around Kalamazoo, including Harding’s, Mega Bev, and more!

  • Estate means that as a winery, you control the process of growing the grapes, as well as making the wine. Nowadays, many wineries make wine, but only a few grow and manage their own vineyard. It’s another level of work and involvement, which we believe ultimately leads to better quality wine. We are an estate winery, in that we control the process of the grapes being grown at Lawton Ridge Vineyard.

  • Yes! The same family that owns and operates Texas Corners Brewing Company also runs Lawton Ridge Winery. You will see our wines exclusively served at the restaurant and brewery located at 6970 Texas Drive, Kalamazoo, MI. The full selection of wine and cider will always be found at the LRW tasting room, while a smaller, curated selection will be found at TCBC. The cider at both locations is the same cider that TCBC has been crafting since 2014. We do aim to produce some exclusive ciders for the tasting room in the future.
